This M-15 Recreational Route "M-15...86 Miles of Smiles" is the first route to be named in the state. This route has many surprises for any visitor willing to divert from their normal course of travel. This title is awarded through the Michigan Department of Transportation and opens several avenues for grants. The initial rail trail in Vassar extends one mile and was completed in 1998. A second trail in Vassar known as the Vassar River Walk runs from Riverside Park along M15 to South Water Street where it links to the M15 Heritage Route.
